Women and girls aged 17 to 35 years inclusive who live in Ireland and have a PPS number are entitled to free contraception. No medical card is required.
This includes:
- GP or nurse consultations to discuss and prescribe contraception
- The pill, patch, ring and contraceptive injection
- Implant (Implanon) – consultation, fitting and removal
- Hormonal coils (Mirena and others) and copper coil – consultation, fitting, 6-week check and removal
- Any necessary follow-up checks related to an implant or coil
- Emergency contraception (also available free at participating pharmacies)
To access the scheme, book a contraception appointment and bring your PPS number and proof of age.
Important: If an implant or coil was fitted while you were aged 17–35 under the scheme, removal and related checks remain free even after you turn 36.

- First consultation: We take a full history, discuss your options and help you choose the most suitable method.
- Implant or coil fitting: Usually booked as a separate appointment after the initial consultation.
- Pill checks: Can often be done with our nurse prescribers.
